Scholarship in Honor of SPC Dane R. Balcon

The SPC Dane R. Balcon JROTC Memorial Scholarship was created in 2014 to honor a unique and accomplished young man, SPC Dane R. Balcon. This scholarship is designed to assist graduating Northside Independent School District (NISD) High School Seniors participating in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) Program. Eligible campuses include Brandeis, Brennan, Clark, Harlan, Holmes, John Jay, Marshall, O'Connor, Stevens, Taft, and Warren High Schools. Scholarship Applicants must attend a 2 - 4-year college or university and have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA or above to apply. An application, essay, and resume are required for this scholarship.

Also available is the SPC Dane R. Balcon JROTC Memorial Grant. Grant(s) will be awarded to applicants pursuing service in the Military, attending a Trade School, or entering the Workforce. Eligible campuses include Brandeis, Brennan, Clark, Harlan, Holmes, John Jay, Marshall, O'Connor, Stevens, Taft, and Warren High Schools. Grant applicants must provide a letter of intent.

*Students can only apply for either the scholarship or the grant, not both.

The SPC Dane R. Balcon Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Memorial Scholarship strives to assist in developing leaders of character by supporting various educational opportunities, to include:

• Providing scholarships and grants in memory of SPC Dane R. Balcon for eligible students who participated in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and are interested in pursuing higher education
• Encouraging and inspiring eligible Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps participants to become educated leaders inspired by the character of SPC Dane R. Balcon
• Providing an opportunity for students to attain an excellent education and honor a Fallen Hero
